Jonathan Fights for the Lord (3)

"All the men who had been hiding for fear of the Philistines came out and joined the army, and we had the greatest victory we have had for quite some time now!"

"Your dad must have really been grateful," David mused, "to you and your friend!"

"Not that you would notice," Jonathan chuckled, "Before the day was out he tried to kill me!"

David sat up and looked at Jonathan. "Kill you!" he exclaimed, "Your own father? Why?"

"I never really could figure out what was going on. I had eaten some honey I found along the way during the battle, and one of the soldiers said my dad had sworn everyone to eat nothing until the battle was over.

I thought it was ridiculous! How much better it would have been if everyone had been refreshed and filled during the battle, instead of faint and hungry!"

"So he wanted to kill you because you ate some honey?"

"Something like that, but the army protected me, saying, 'Should Jonathan die, who with the hand of our God has brought about this great victory for Israel? Absolutely not!' So anyway, they protected me. My dad acts now like nothing happened at all. It is really quite amazing."

"It sounds to me like it would be wise to be scarce around your father! To try to kill you, his first born son, just because you ate some honey!"
