"So what is it like being a king's son?" David asked as he and Jonathan walked in the field at twilight. "Boring, really!" Jonathan laughed, "Even though I may be crown prince of Israel, I can't really say or do anything on my own. I have so many mentors and guides I can't even turn around without someone telling me I should be doing it different!" He laughed again as he sat down against a tree with David. "Actually, there was one time that I could do just as I wanted, and it came out very well indeed! It was when the Philistines were so aggressive against us, and so much of our army had run out of fear, that no one had any time to mind the crown prince! Usually when I fight in a battle, I am surrounded by protectors to make sure I don't get involved in anything too nasty, but this time it was just me and my friend who bares my armour." "What happened?" David asked, fascinated. "Let me tell you the story! We were both walking by ourselves, passing under that little hillock, right over there. Most of our army were hiding away in the hills, for fear of being killed or molested by the Philistines. It was kind of like you and the giant the other day. I was outraged that the Philistines were treating the people of the Living God that way! Is there not a God in Israel? So I said to my friend, 'Why don't we go over and find one of the Philistine's camps?' |
My young friend was with me all the way, so we headed that direction. For once there was no mentor to turn me around for my own safety." "I've never really had that trouble," David mused, "All my brothers are content to have me out in the field with the sheep. I guess I am out of their way out there. It is what I prefer anyway, because it gives me plenty of time to worship the Lord. But go on!" "Well, we got close enough to the enemy's camp to hear them going about their business, preparing to wipe us out, I suppose. Anyway, I turned to my friend and said, 'You know, it isn't armies and swords and chariots that win battles, it is the Lord! And He is not limited to only use many and great men! He could use us to defeat these Philistines if He wanted to!' "My friend just smiled his sly smile at me and said, 'You lead the way, and I will follow! I believe just as you do, and the Lord may use us to do a great thing for Israel this day!' "Thinking about it, I wondered just how we should know whether or not the Lord would fight for us. So I said, 'We will go over to their camp. If they tell us to wait where we are, and they will come to us, we will go away, for the Lord is not with us. But, on the other hand, if they tell us to come up to them, we can know that the Lord has delivered them into our hand!'" |
